LO5: Evaluation After Feedback & How to Minimise Risk of Negative Effect

  • My feedback suggested that I need to make the overall purpose of the project clearer. I also need to explain what the unique selling point of INTER-AR is.
  • In my marketing section, I need to make it clear how INTER-AR would be marketed to its target audience.
  • In my distribution section, I need to discuss where the product would be available.
  • I need to discuss the possibility of an age rating for INTER-AR
  • I need to discuss how web 3.0 effects my app.
Changes Made to Presentation

In response to the feedback I received, I have added the following slides to my presentation.

Minimising Risk to Audience (Legal, Ethical, Moral, Social)

As I would have secured the full copyright for all images used in the app, there would be no legal implications for my audience if they wanted to share pictures of themselves using the app. For example, they would be able to share pictures of furniture they like on their social media accounts.

As the company behind INTER-AR is likely to store consumer data, ethically and also legally speaking we have to be transparent with the consumer about what data we collect and why we do so.

LO4: How Audiences will be Targeted

The target audience for my app will be both males and females between the ages of 26 and 40 who would fall into the ABC1 categories of the NRS social scale. I feel that people between the ages of 26 & 40 are more likely to use and fully understand an AR application, which is why I chose this age range. I believe that people from the ABC1 categories of the NRS social scale are more likely to use my application as it features furnishings from reasonably high end retailers (e.g. Oak Furniture Land).

I will target this audience by advertising on social media platforms that are most commonly used by the target audience. It will be mainly advertised on twitter as this platform has a feature where a company can pay for their tweets to be “promoted” onto people’s timelines. They can chose for it to appear on the timelines of a people from a certain demographic so the company behind INTER-AR could promote the tweet so it is seen by the target audience. Audio-visual adverts could also be shown on TV in the adverts of programmes that share INTER-AR’s target audience.

LO4: Proposal

Intended Idea

The intended idea for my project is to create an augmented reality app that allows people to view furniture from the UK’s most popular home ware retailers in their own home. Users will also be able to purchase products directly from the app.

Integrated Technologies

The main technology to be incorporated into my app is augmented reality (AR). AR is a live view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer generated perceptual information.

Purpose

The purpose of INTER-AR is to allow people to visualise furniture from popular UK shops in their own homes. The app will make it easier to see how furniture will fit in a room, as all the 3D generated images of the furniture will be to scale with the room. The user can visualise multiple pieces of furniture at once, which makes it easier for them to plan the redesign of a room.

Target Audience

The target audience for my app will be both males and females between the ages of 26 and 40 who would fall into the ABC1 categories of the NRS social scale. I feel that people between the ages of 26 & 40 are more likely to use and fully understand an AR application, which is why I chose this age range. I believe that people from the ABC1 categories of the NRS social scale are more likely to use my application as it features furnishings from reasonably high end retailers (e.g. Oak Furniture Land).

Visual Style Ideas (House Style)

I chose blue as the main colour for my house style because it is strongly associated with tranquility and calmness. Redesigning a room can be a stressful experience for some people so the use of this colour may help promote positive connotations of for the app. The colour blue also has connotations of cleanliness, which is a key aspect of modern design, as a lot of houses tend to adapt a minimalist theme in their design. I have used the colour orange as it has connotations of joy, which could help promote a positive mood for my application.

Marketing

INTER-AR will be advertised on social media platforms that are most commonly used by the target audience.

LO3

Legal & Regulatory

The main legal issue I have to consider when designing this product is the Data Protection Act (1998). As people can take photos of the rooms in their house showing the digitized furniture they have placed on the app and share them on social media. I have a responsibility to make sure images of peoples houses are not accessed by anyone other than the people who are using the app and the people they choose to share it with. To abide by this law I will make sure my application requires people to create a password-protected account in order to use it. I could also incorporate a two-factor authentication system to make it extra secure. If a user wants to access their account on another device, they will need to have access to the main device their account uses; this will stop unwanted people accessing their account from another location.

Another legal issue I have to consider when creating my app is Copyright law. The images of furniture used in my application will belong to the company that produces them (e.g. IKEA, DFS, Oak Furniture Land). I must ensure I have permission to use images of furniture that do not belong to me and I must ensure.

I must also respect people intellectual property when creating my app as anything created as part of a company belongs to said company as they own the intellectual property. So if anyone leaves the company they cannot make a profit off the idea.

Social & Moral

As my app features no form of social interaction there are very few social and moral issues associated with it. As the app allows people to take pictures of their room then the company has a responsibility to not share any pictures taken with anyone else.

LO2: M2 - Job Roles - New & Emerging

An application developer could be considered a new and emerging job role in the media industry due to the rise of the prosumer. This means that thanks to converging technologies, regular people can design and make their own apps. This could impact my proposal as it means that there are more options available when it comes to choosing an app developer. Thanks to the rise of the prosumer, this role could even be filled by another member of the team.

A website checker is a modern job role. However, this doesn't take a specific skill to carry out compared to some other job roles such as coders. This could yet again be carried out by another member of the team. They could be hired cheaply off of a freelancer website (a website where a client can hire somebody who fits the specific job/skill set that they require to be carried out).

LO2: P3 - Job Roles

App Development - Job roles required & skills needed

Application Developer

  • Analytical Skills: Application developers must be able to recognize the needs of customers, and create new applications that answer those needs.
  • Communication: Application developers must be able to clearly communicate their ideas to coders, teammates and management.
  • Creativity: Creativity is needed to help invent new ways of approaching problems and developing innovative applications.
  • Customer-Service: If dealing directly with clients and customers, application developers would need good customer service skills to answer questions and fix issues.
  • Attention to Detail: Applications have many parts and all must work together for the application to function.
  • Problem-Solving: As issues come up, application developers need to be able to make decisions that move the project forward.
  • Teamwork: As part of a large team of developers, coders and more, application developers need to work well with others.
  • Technical Skills: Application developers must be adept in computer languages and have the good technical know-how.
Graphic Designer

Creativity
First and foremost, graphic designers need creativity. It’s hard to come up with new ideas and innovative designs if you don’t know how to tap into your creative resources. Figuring out ways to keep your mind sharp and your ideas fresh will help you succeed in a design career. You don’t necessarily need artistic skills to land a job in graphic design, but you’ll want a general understanding of basic artistic elements to help translate that to the computer.
Typography
If you’re in design, you probably already know the running joke about Comic Sans. And there is a similar growing loathing of Papyrus for the design-savvy. That’s why typography can make or break your design. Fonts go beyond just fun names and interesting scripts; a lot goes into the technical design behind each letter. You’ll need to understand terms such as kerning, line height, tracking, leading, white space, and more. Understanding how to find the right font – and knowing how to create your own – will go a long way in design success.
Software
Having artistic skills on paper might help you with a career in graphic design, but most of the action takes place behind a computer screen. Understanding how to use the industry standard software will be crucial in landing your dream graphic design job. The most popular and well-known graphic design software comes from Adobe, with an entire creative suite including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
Web Design
These days, it’s not uncommon for graphic designers to also be web designers. Much of what you see on a website was designed by someone with graphic design skills, and plenty of designers also hold enough knowledge to work with HTML and CSS. Adding web design to your portfolio will only increase your chances of landing a graphic design job.
Communication
Understanding what a client wants from a design is the key to creating a successful product. It might be hard to talk to clients who don’t understand limitations or the right terminology, so you will have to be patient and learn how to really understand what a client wants for their design.
